A Guide to Successful Genealogical Research

The following is intended to help the average person find information about their Polish ancestors. It is important to note, that very seldom will you be lucky enough to find someone who has researched the same line as you are trying to work on. Most of the time, it's a little bit here and there with large amounts of dead ends. Make sure that you have done what you can do on your own. This would include writing down everything you know about your family:

  1. See Beginning Genealogy for a self paced, free genealogy class .
  2. Quizzing your relatives about what they know.
  3. Make a few trips to your local Family History Center.
  4. Check the census reports for where your family was living.
  5. Check the local newspapers for articles about your family
  6. Check the Social Security Death Index.
  7. Visit the cemeteries your family is buried in.

The following are some research links you might find helpful in your research

Another useful option are news groups. My favorites are:
soc.genealogy.slavic
soc.genealogy.german
soc.genealogy.surnames

I also belong to mail lists. The two that I know of specific for Polish genealogy are:
GenPol subscribe by sending the one word message "subscribe" to
genpol@chem.uw.edu.pl
Poland-Roots subscribe by sending the one word message "subscribe" to :
Poland-roots@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu

I admit this is just a start to what I would like to but on the page, and I welcome help from
anyone out there.  I am currently reading  The Polish Way  by Adam Zamoyski, a thousand
year History of the Poles and their Culture.  So maybe at some point I can put up a list of
all the surnames in the book.  This page will always be changing, so stop by often!
